Michael Anthony Hornak is the Editor-in-chief of the MSX: 
The Metrosexual's Magazine. He is also the president of the 
Hornak Communications, Inc. at present. The mission of 
MSX is to uphold the true definition and a healthy image of 
the concept "metrosexuality" MSX, i.e. The Metrosexual's

Ask his biggest critics where the metrosexual came from and 
they'll say he was created by a journalist and made famous by 
advertising agencies. It's true that marketers packaged-up 
and sold the term as a way to target their ideal male consumer 
and it's true they continue to publicize the image-conscious 
man, but look beyond the metrosexual label. 

Metrosexualism is but one way society describes the most 
obvious affects of a growing trend in the world's male 
population. For decades men have been becoming more self- 
focused and have been staying independent longer. Marriage 
statistics from countries around the world show men waiting 
increasingly longer to tie the knot. Ad agencies and the 
media simply recognized the fact that men prefer to spend 
more money on themselves each year as a result. The same 
agencies have shined a bright light on the now most 
commonly recognized attributes of metrosexualism like a 
passion for fashionable new clothes, a great hair style and 
trips to the spa and gym. ,

But men aren't so much getting in touch with their 
feminine sides, they're getting in touch with themselves 
and they're developing deeper awareness. They have 
become more aware of themselves, how other people 
react to them, their environments and what this world has 
to offer them. They've become more self-respecting, 
thoughtful and open-minded men. The trend of these 
more self-focused, self-improved personalities has been 
redefining the modern male and it has reasonably caught 
a lot of people's attention. 

What does this trend mean from a cultural perspective? 
On average, men now place higher value on things like 
the arts, personal development and education. The 
cultural stimuli would presumably evolve to 
accommodate the new interests and I think the cultural 
stimuli has responded and evolved. Shopping venues, 
designed almost to be forms of entertainment now, keep 
increasing in number and music genres like R&B and 
Emo, rooted in emotional expression, are increasingly 
popular and influential.

The stereotypically male labor service areas like 
plumbing, carpentry and car repair are losing ground 
to labor markets that men now find to be more 
fulfilling. Today, overflowing with young male talent 
are the graphic design and independent film industries 
to name a couple. That is not to say that would-be 
plumbers all prefer to make independent films now, 
but rather the guy who 50 years ago would have been a 
mechanic, today is instead designing a sleek concept 
carat his deskjob. 

This guy is riding no wave of a fad, he was born into a 
rapidly-changing social era. He may take his influence 
from one of any number of sources encountered in his 
lifetime. Also true is that he may never make a swift 
return to labor service and maybe ad agencies will be 
partly responsible for that. Such a guy designing cars 
at his desk may very well get bored of such a lifestyle, 
but for now he's perfectly comfortable with who he is, 
especially while his hair looks great and he's wearing 
his crisp new Emporio Armani shirt.
